Call for Manuscripts: Special Issue on Educational Pluralism

Call for Manuscripts

A Special Issue of the Peabody Journal of Education

on Educational Pluralism and Social Cohesion

The Call for Manuscripts

In recent years, scholars have noted global trends that include greater social and political polarization and division, threats to social cohesion, and disruptions to democratic norms and practices. Educational pluralism is a structure for school systems in which the state funds and regulates, but does not exclusively deliver, education. Such systems enable schools to differentiate from one another philosophically or pedagogically, while holding all of them to the same standard of academic success. We are seeking manuscripts for a special issue of the Peabody Journal of Education that explore the extent to which the broad aims of educational freedom and social cohesion can be balanced - or if they are inherently in tension, and how might this depend upon history and context. Manuscripts may cover a range of disciplinary perspectives on topics that may include:

  • Legal and philosophical aspects, such as human rights, parental rights, the “common school” model
  • Issues of pedagogy, curriculum, and school culture
  • Political tensions, such as what kind of schools should not be funded in plural systems, what kinds of topics should be off limits in a democratic society, and the current “battle lines” in pluralistic systems

Submission Information

We are accepting manuscript at this time. For any inquiries about the appropriateness of contribution topics, please contact Dr. TJ D’Agostino at adagosti@nd.edu or Dr. Ashley Berner at Ashley.Berner@jhu.edu.
