Iodine Deficiency Disorders
Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) stem from a lack of iodine in the body. IDD is one of the most common human diseases and causes developmental delays and mental disabilities. Without proper amounts of iodine, the thyroid cannot produce the hormones for proper brain development. Haiti's iodine standards are not enforced which contributes to a widespread shortage of iodized salt in the diets of the vast majority of Haitian households.
Treatment
By adding iodine into salt used for cooking or processed food (such as bouillon cubes, condiments, bread) countries can prevent IDD. In countries without formal supply-chains, fortifying salt used in processed food is a non-intrusive way to boost iodine levels and prevent IDD.
