From Self to Structure: Building Teachers' Capacity for Ethnic-Racial Socialization in Schools
As part of our efforts to build our intellectual community and connect with scholars whose work resonates with our core mission, the Shaw Center for Children and Families’ Scholar Series is proud to welcome Dr. Deborah Rivas-Drake as our next distinguished guest speaker.
About the Speaker
Dr. Rivas-Drake, the Stephanie J. Rowley Collegiate Professor of Education and Psychology at the University of Michigan, is a leader in a field dedicated to creating a more equitable society. Her research is centered on illuminating practical and effective strategies to combat racism and xenophobia, with a clear goal of helping young people thrive and make positive contributions to their communities. Through her work with the Contexts of Academic + Socioemotional Adjustment (CASA) Lab, she and her team explore how school, peer, and family environments can help adolescents navigate complex issues of race and ethnicity.
Additionally, Dr. Rivas-Drake has been recently elected the new President of the Society for Research in Child Development (SRCD), making her the first Latina to hold this prestigious leadership position. Her extensive service to the organization includes roles as Secretary of the Governing Council and Chair of the Publications Committee, among others. This significant achievement further highlights her excellence in scholarship and leadership in the field.
About the Talk:
In her talk, Dr. Rivas-Drake will share findings from her ongoing research on teachers' roles as agents of change. She will discuss how educators can use ethnic-racial socialization to promote racial equity in their classrooms and will also present emerging insights from the Stepping uP Against Racism and Xenophobia (SPARX) Project. This public scholarship initiative aims to provide free, accessible resources and curriculum to support K-12 educators in their racial equity work. Her presentation will offer invaluable insights for anyone interested in social justice and community building, and we are excited to have a scholar of her caliber and a mission-aligned collaborator join us. We look forward to a thought-provoking discussion that will enrich our collective intellectual life and strengthen our commitment to our shared goals.
