Panel Discussion: Tackling Fact Fluency and Early Word Problems with Nicole McNeil

Nicole McNeil will be featured Thursday, May 25, as a panelist as part of Education Week’s K-12 Essentials Forum, Math Foundations for All.

The forum is a free, online event from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. EDT that includes math practitioners and researchers who will tackle questions such as:

• Do kids really need to know all those multiplication tables?
• Which should come first, math concepts or procedures?
• Why don’t schools pay as much attention to math disability as they do to dyslexia?
• How can parents know how to help when materials and methods have changed since they were young?

 McNeil will discuss fact fluency and early word problems at 2:30 p.m. EDT with fellow panelist Brian Bushart, a fourth-grade teacher from West Irondequoit Schools in New York.

McNeil is a professor of psychology and the Alliance for Catholic Education College Professor at the University of Notre Dame. She directs the Cognition Learning and Development (CLAD) Lab and is a fellow of the Institute for Educational Initiatives. She is a member of the South Bend Community School Corporation’s (SBCSC) Restorative Justice in Education Advisory Council, a fellow of the Association for Psychological Science, and an associate editor for the journal Cognitive Science. McNeil is well-published and has received several awards, including the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) and the Boyd McCandless Award. McNeil is an active member on the steering committee for TutorND, a tutor formation program designed to increase children’s access to high-impact, evidence-based tutoring in reading and math.
