Dr. Ernest Morrell Publishes New Book

Dr. Ernest Morrell has published a new book for researchers and post-graduate academics entitled Stories from Inequity to Justice in Literacy Education: Confronting Digital DividesThe book, which Dr. Morrell co-edited with Dr. Jennifer Roswell, “challenges the assumption that access to technology is pervasive and globally balanced.” This book explores the literacy outcomes for young people around the globe with limited access to technology and digital resources.

The CRC Press describes the book as follows:

Drawing on research studies from around the globe, Stories from Inequity to Justice in Literacy Education identifies social, economic, racial, political and geographical factors which can limit populations’ access to technology, and outlines the negative impact this can have on literacy attainment. Reflecting macro, meso and micro-inequities, chapters highlight complex issues surrounding the productive use of technology and the mobilization of multimodal texts for academic performance and illustrate how digital divides might be remedied to resolve inequities in learning environments and beyond.

Contesting the digital divides which are implicitly embedded in aspects of everyday life and learning, this text will be of great interest to researchers and post-graduate academics in the field of literacy education.

Several scholars and researchers contributed chapters to Stories from Inequity to Justice in Literacy Education, and their work is divided into three sections in this book. Section 1 explores macro perspectives, looking at big gaps, divides, and inequities in South Africa, Australia, and Ethiopia. Section 2 looks at meso perspectives and how to make digital advances in regions of the UK, the US, and Hong Kong. Finally, Section 3 investigates how digital divides have been addressed in smaller communities in the US and Brazil.

Stories from Inequity to Justice in Literacy Education builds on Dr. Morrell’s body of scholarly work, which largely explores how to create pedagogies of access and liberation among urban youth. These titles include Critical Literacy and Urban YouthThe Art of Critical Pedagogy: Possibilities for Moving from Theory to Practice in Urban Schools, and Critical Media Pedagogy: Teaching for Achievement in City Schools. This new book expands on Dr. Morrell’s work to expose inequities existent in literacy education in the United States and around the globe.
