Notre Dame Economist Chloe Gibbs Appointed Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research

Notre Dame, IN — Chloe Gibbs, assistant professor of economics at the University of Notre Dame and director of the Program for Interdisciplinary Educational Research (ND PIER) in the Institute for Educational Initiatives (IEI), has been appointed a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER).

Gibbs’ appointment spans two of NBER’s research programs: Children and Families, and Economics of Education. She is among 44 new Faculty Research Fellows selected this year, joining a distinguished cohort of early-career economists whose work demonstrates exceptional promise in informing policy through rigorous, data-driven research.

“Chloe's appointment to NBER is a proud moment for our institute and reflects how her research has an impact on the field, particularly in the area of influencing policy and practice for early childhood education—a critical moment in the development of young children,” said Matt Kloser, Hackett Family Director of the Institute for Educational Initiatives. “Her work sits at the intersection of economics, education, and equity—exactly the kind of interdisciplinary, impact-oriented research we strive to support and amplify at Notre Dame.”

“I’m honored to join the community of scholars at NBER,” said Gibbs. “This appointment affirms the importance of research that informs how we design and deploy effective investments in young children and families. I’m grateful to engage in this work alongside collaborators and students who are similarly motivated to answer important research questions that affect children’s lives.”

At Notre Dame, Gibbs leads ND PIER, a predoctoral training program that equips emerging scholars to conduct interdisciplinary, policy-relevant research on educational equity and effectiveness. Her own research focuses on the economics of education, particularly early childhood interventions and the design and evaluation of education policies. Her findings have shaped national conversations around Head Start and other public programs aimed at supporting children and families.

Gibbs earned her Ph.D. from the University of Chicago’s Harris School of Public Policy and is also a faculty affiliate of the Wilson Sheehan Lab for Economic Opportunities (LEO).

Founded in 1920, the National Bureau of Economic Research is the nation's leading nonprofit economic research organization. Faculty Research Fellows are selected through a highly competitive process and contribute to shaping evidence-based public policy.
