Associate Professor Anna Haskins Receives the Black Excellence Faculty Award
Associate Professor Anna Haskins was awarded the Black Excellence Faculty Award by Notre Dame Student Government in collaboration with the Notre Dame Black Student Association. This award is intended to honor the outstanding Black community members on campus.
The nomination letter reads as follows:
“In the short time that she has been on our campus, Prof. Anna Haskins has embodied Black excellence in many different ways. In her scholarship, she has advanced research on mass incarceration, system avoidance, racial inequality, and educational outcomes. She has engaged both undergraduates and graduate students in her ongoing fieldwork on these topics. In her teaching, she has taught undergraduate courses on Mass Incarceration and Social Problems (with an emphasis on Racial Inequality), which have exposed our students to sociological theory and research on topics that are important for understanding race and racism in American society. She has also taught a graduate class on race and social institutions at the graduate level. Her teaching evaluations demonstrate that her students greatly value her contributions as an instructor, and find her to be an inspiring figure in the classroom and beyond. She also helped establish a training seminar on "Race-Ethnicity" that provides a space for graduate students and faculty to present and gain feedback on their ongoing research in this area. Prof. Haskins is also a strong mentor to graduate students of color in the department. In terms of service, Prof. Haskins has worked hard to help transform the climate of our department to make it a more inclusive and supportive place for all students with different backgrounds and experiences. She has also served as the associate director of the Institute for Race and Resilience on Notre Dame's campus for the past year. In this role, she has advanced the Institute's mission to challenge systemic racism and to advance racial equality through research, education, and community empowerment. In short, Prof. Haskins embodies and advances Black Excellence in everything that she does on our campus and beyond. She is very deserving of this award, and our campus is very fortunate to have her.”
