The interdisciplinary Education, Schooling, and Society (ESS) minor that is offered through the Institute for Educational Initiatives is one of the most popular minors at the University of Notre Dame.
Students call the ESS minor an important avenue of service and learning, helping them to consider a future career in education while also studying the links between education and socio-cultural trends. See a video in which the students describe the program: ESS Students: Choose the ESS Minor.
The ESS curriculum embraces the University’s desire to engage undergraduates in independent research. ESS seniors are required to take a course that combines an integration of their learnings and the generation of new knowledge. The research often has a component of service-learning that takes place in local educational settings within the South Bend or Michiana regions.
