Leon Gilman
Leon J. Gilman is a PhD student in the Sociology Department at the University of Notre Dame. He is also a graduate student affiliate with the Center for Research on Educational Opportunity (CREO) and the Program for Interdisciplinary Education Research (ND PIER).
Stemming from his interest in the complexity of how education can improve people’s lives, his main research areas are the sociology of education, social stratification, and gender/racial educational inequalities. His work focuses on unpacking the social forces shaping educational inequalities and determining how policies or programs reduce systemic barriers. He is currently working on a longitudinal multi-cohort study of young adulthood labor market outcomes among those who start but do not complete college.
His published research used quantitative methods to measure and disaggregate early childhood sociodemographic differences in perceptions of school culture and climate. He has also contributed to published work evaluating gender equity campaigns, early childhood literacy programs, and statewide teacher evaluation systems. Before Notre Dame, Leon received an M.S. in Educational Psychology from the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and a B.A. in Sociology from St. Norbert College.
