Series Introduction ~ Foundations, Futures, and Frontiers: Reimagining Early Literacy for Multilingual Learners

At the University of Notre Dame’s Center for Literacy Education and ALMA Initiative, we believe that early literacy development is both a foundation and a frontier, especially for multilingual learners whose voices and languages enrich our classrooms.

This three-part series, Foundations, Futures, and Frontiers: Reimagining Early Literacy for Multilingual Learners, explores how educators and schools can foster strong beginnings, imagine bold possibilities, and push the boundaries of what we know about early literacy.

Join Dr. Elisa Zwier Dralle and Dr. Katy Lichon as they invite us to reflect, rethink, and renew our collective commitment to providing a robust foundation for early literacy development. For millions of young multilingual learners, the story of how reading begins and in which language(s), remains unfinished. Before we build stronger literacy systems, we must ask: What do early literacy foundations look like when children’s worlds are woven with threads from more than one language? What future might we envision? What role do we play as educators and leaders?

Join us for the following series as we reimagine early literacy for multilingual learners.

  • Building Strong Foundations: What We Still Need to Learn About Young Multilingual Readers and Writers
  • Future in Focus: Rethinking the Science of Reading for Multilingual Early Learners
  • At the Frontier of Literacy Development for Multilingual Learners: Evidence-Based Options for Early Educators
