Rachel Keynton

Bio

Rachel Keynton is a PhD Candidate in the Department of Sociology and a graduate student affiliate of the Center for Research on Education Opportunity. Rachel joined the department at Notre Dame with an MSc in Sociology from the London School of Economics, and a BA with majors in Music and in Society & Environment and with a minor in Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley. She has also worked for many years as a music educator and in performing arts management. Her research interests include racial, gender and socioeconomic inequality in education; extracurricular activities; childhood and parenting; arts and culture. Rachel’s dissertation explores the role of mission-driven extracurricular arts activities within the broader context of educational inequality, and how racial and class oppressions are reproduced and/or resisted at the interface between families and sites of cultural enrichment and education.
