Bio

Calvin Zimmermann is the O’Shaughnessy assistant professor of education in the department of sociology and a member of the faculty of the Center for Research on Educational Opportunity (CREO) at the University of Notre Dame.

Zimmermann’s current research examines how racial and gendered meanings shape children's social relationships in early childhood, with a particular emphasis on school and family settings. His work contributes to race and intersectional scholarship that moves beyond examining inequalities among youth or adults, and instead demonstrates how inequalities manifest themselves early in the life course of individuals. He is primarily interested in how systems of race, class, and gender affect the school and familial experiences of young Black children.
