Research interests
Professor Hallinan’s research is primarily in the sociology of education. In particular, she studies the effects of formal and informal organization
of schools on students’ cognitive and social development. Her present research is an analysis of sector effects on student achievement.
Professor Hallinan is the editor of the new book, Frontiers in Sociology of Education. The book, published by Springer, aims to provide a roadmap for sociologists and other social scientists as they set bold new directions for future research on schools.

Bio
Maureen T. Hallinan, Ph.D., is Notre Dame's White Professor of Sociology. She was the founding director of the Institute for Educational Initiatives (IEI) and of the Center for Research on Educational Opportunity (CREO) in the IEI. Prof. Hallinan’s primary research interest is in the effects of the formal and informal organization of schools on students’ cognitive and social development. Her most recent research is the analysis of sector effects on student achievement. She was the principal investigator in the Comparative Analysis of Best Practices in Public and Private Schools, a five-year project funded by the U.S. Department of Education to determine the best practices adopted by educators to promote student learning and social development.
With over 120 articles in professional journals, Prof. Hallinan is also the author or editor of nine books and has several chapters in edited volumes. She was president of the American Sociological Association in 1995-1996 and president of the Sociological Research Association in 2000. She was elected to the National Academy of Education in 1999 and was vice president from 2000-2004. She is a member of the following honorary societies: Alpha Kappa Delta, Phi Beta Kappa, Pi Lambda Theta, and the Laureate Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi. In addition, she is the recipient of the Willard Waller Award from the American Sociological Association (2004), and the following honors from the University of Notre Dame: Notre Dame Award for Excellence in Research on Catholic Education (2007), Faculty Award (2006), Research Achievement Award (2003), and Presidential Award Citation (1997).
Professor Hallinan is the editor of the new book, Frontiers in Sociology of Education. The book, published by Springer, aims to provide a roadmap for sociologists and other social scientists as they set bold new directions for future research on schools.
She is the editor of Handbook of the Sociology of Education, published in 2000.
Her other edited volumes include Restructuring Schools: Promising Practices and Policies and School Sector and Student Outcomes.
